New York City has been described as the city that never sleeps, but you could easily apply the moniker to London as well. Since London was first a city, it has been teeming with life and anything you could possibly want to do can be done in the city’s center. A city so rich in tradition, activities, and history needs more than a cursory glance of course, but much of what the city has to offer can be experienced in a few day’s time.

A good starting point is to immerse yourself in the city’s history. You will come across everything from dark medieval secrets to glorious, priceless crown jewels. The city’s history is so rich and vast, that there is something for everyone, even those who claim to have little interest in history. Be sure to pay a visit to Madame Tussauds, which is the world’s best lifelike wax museum, where you can see famous people not just from the UK, but from all around the world. Also, do not miss out on the London Dungeon, where the horrors of medieval London are bought to life.

One museum you cannot miss is The British Museum with one of the largest and most extensive collection of archaeological artifacts in the world. The crown jewels are found inside the Tower of London and here you will hear stories of curious prisons reserved for only the most famous prisoners. History and art come together at the National Portrait Gallery. Portraits of Britain’s most famous figures are on display in its halls. The British Museum, containing one of the world’s grandest collections of archaeological artifacts, is a necessity for any itinerary. Additionally, there are numerous, smaller museums and art galleries that are worth a visit.

For the professional shopper, a stroll down Oxford Street is highly recommended. If the bustle of the city begins to wear on you, however, a stopover in Hyde Park brings the peace of the countryside to the city. Outdoor markets are one of London’s highlights, and you will find Portobello Market northeast of Hyde Park. London’s history does not exist only on the busiest streets. Charming side streets take the visitor to times past and to unexpected treasures such as Covent Gardens in central London. In the center of town, the London eye provides a bird’s eye view of the city and provides a comprehensive display of all that London has to offer.

As day turns to night, it is time to catch up with some friends at the local pub. You are sure to find at least one beer on tap that will hit the spot. Once your thirst is slaked and you are properly hydrated, it is time to dance. An international city like London is brimming with clubs filled with all kinds of dancing; everything from techno, to trance, to hip hop can be found. You are sure to find a rave and some Latin and ethnic dancing too. You can also attend a rugby or football contest if one of London’s countless teams is playing.

Vicenza is a small town situated in the north east of Italy. Vicenza is the capital of the Veneto region which also includes the renowned Italian town of Venice. Vicenza is situated about 200km east of Milan. The town of Vicenza has a population of just over 110,000 and has traditionally been a significant centre of the Italian textile industry.

Computer parts are also produced in Vicenza of late. Tourists do not prefer to have this town in their list of places to visit. It still becomes a tourist spot by virtue of the fact that it is close to Venice and it has some fascinating buildings that illustrate the architecture of Italian period. We mention a few of those spots below.

The 16th Century architecture can be seen in Vicenza in the form of Basilica Palladiana which was built by the well known architect Andrea Palladio whose sculpture impacted the artists of the Italian Renaissance period.

It is desirable to start the sight seeing tour of Vicenza from the Basilica Palladiana because it is very much located in the center of the Pizza dei Signori that makes it easily reachable.

The Civico Museum in Vicenza is a wonderful place where one can find the art works of the Veneto region that mirrors the nuances of the Italian art. This museum is open to public between 9am and 5 pm.

The Monte Berico Basilica is another architectural wonder that is located atop a hill in the fringes of the town of Vicenza. A scenic view of the entire town can be had from this Basilica and hence the atmosphere here is serene in nature.

The current building on this spot in Vicenza dates back to the 18th century, even though the significance of the actual place dates back much further.

This is supposedly the place where the Virgin Mary made two supernatural appearances. This basilica in Vicenza opens at 6.15am and closes at 7.30pm, though it closes for two hours in the afternoon from 12.30.

The Archaeology Museum in Vicenza is not a chief attraction for tourists although it does have an absorbing, if not somewhat small, collection of artefacts that were unearthed regionally.

There are many interesting things to do in Vicenza so one should have no fear of getting bored.
Danube river cruises are one of the best ways to see many inland countries that are usually inaccessible on ocean liners. The Danube River stretches over 2,000 miles and snakes through locations such as Germany, Croatia, Romania, Hungary and Yugoslavia. These types of western Europe cruises are a wonderful opportunity to see the cultures of these countries first hand.

Whereas ocean liners cannot enter these narrower waters, smaller river boats are used for Danube river cruises; they can take you up and down the old waterways and canals that were used in previous centuries. The number of passengers is typically less than 200, which also means that you can get friendlier with your fellow shipmates.

It is commonly assumed that western Europe cruises that travel the rivers are not as of high quality as sea cruises. This is in fact incorrect; the river boats have many comfortable cabins that offer all the amenities you would expect from an ocean liner. You are even privy to having your own balcony where you can watch the locals go about daily life on the shoreline as you glide by.

The barges also tend to dock at smaller locations and you can disembark to discover a completely different way of life in rural areas of the varying countries you visit. The boats also dock in the well known towns and cities so you will not miss the chance to see famous landmarks.

Many cruise companies are now offering themed Danube river cruises which are a whole lot of fun. It could be a classical music theme, opera or a shopping trip which visits the many Christmas markets held annually in these countries. Other themes available include cycling, walking and horse riding trips.

These types of western Europe cruises can be found quite readily on the internet. Here you will find websites that provide more detailed information on the packages available and allow you to reserve your place. Upon booking, it is advisable to let the cruise company know of any particular dietary needs or mobility issues.

There are numerous operators that offer passengers short or long duration cruises. You may only want a short trip, say three or four days and this can easily be arranged. Cruises that last 14 nights or more are also a popular choice.

It is of no particular importance what kind of traveler you are when it comes to Danube river cruises. There is something to suit everyone and it is a great adventure from start to finish. You will have plenty of good times to remember on your way back home.

Fontana di Trevi as it's called in italian is definetely a magnificent master piece created in the very center of Rome.

by Sarah Dudleymore

Fontana di Trevi as it’s called in italian is definetely a magnificent master piece created in the very center of Rome.

It’s the largest standing and most ambitious of the Baroque fountains of Rome. Measuring 25.9 meters (85 feet) high and 19.8 meters (65 feet) wide. Rome is rich in abundance of fountains. Currently consisted of over 3,000 fountains scattered all over the city. There is no place on earth like this.

This masterpiece is located at the crossing of 3 streets (tre vie) and it’s the final point of the “modern” Acqua Vergine which is anancient aqueduct that supplied water to Rome, more than 22 km (14 miles) away from the city. This aqueduct served Rome for more than 400 years.

Numerous alterations were made as the centuries passed. In 1629 Pope Urban VIII, thought the earlier fountain was losing its beauty and asked Bernini to sketch and give the fountain a new definite, monumental form.

When the Pope died the project was shelved! The project was adopted and taken over by Nicola Salvi! Work finally began in 1732, and the fountain was completed in 1762. Though Bernini’s project was rejected, there are many Bernini touches in the fountain as it was built

A traditional legend says that when a visitor throws a coin into the fountain, he will be back to Rome again. The tossing of the “three coins” was supposed to be done by three different individuals, but nowadays the current version of the legend says that two coins will lead to a new romance and three will ensure that you will either divorce or get married!

How your love could be governed by the tossing of three coins into a fountain is still a mystery many people believes in. This act has to be done with the right hand over one’s left shoulder and is said to bring good luck.

Each day approximately three thousands euros are believed to be thrown into the fountain and collected at night. The money has been used to help poor people and homeless in Rome. Nevertheless regular attempts to steal coins from the fountain are witnessed very frequently, including some using a magnetized pole. In 1998 the fountain has been refurbished and provided with re-circulating pumps.

Many people wonder what is the building behind Trevi Fountain. It’s called Palazzo dei Duchi di Polis. In the center is a modeled replica of the triumphal arch. The center niche has free-standing columns for maximal light-and-shade.

On the outside Oceanus, water comes out from her urn and Salubrity holds a cup from which a snake drinks out from. On the top is a copy of the Roman origin of the aqueducts. The tritons and horses provide symmetrical balance, with the maximum contrast with their facial expressions and poses.

The theme of the gigantic scheme that jumps forward it’s called “Taming of the waters”. The mixing of water and rockwork is simply amazing.

Trevi area is definetely one of the most beautiful areas of Rome.

Visiting Scotland and hiring a camper van or motorhome is becoming a popular choice for people within and for those who travel to the UK. The reasons are many, but may include the rugged coastline, open wilderness, high mountains and stunning lochs. Here are some routes that take you to the Hebridean islands.

Easy access to the Hebridean Islands is one reason why many people choose to hire a motorhome in Scotland. Glasgow to Oban and then on to one of the main Hebridean islands is a popular route. Glasgow to Oban only takes around 3 hours. Plenty of time to acquaint yourself with the motorhome. You’ll definitely enjoy the Loch Lomond National Park and the welcoming campsites. The fresh air, the relaxed atmosphere and the perspective of adventure are the key ingredients at the beginning of any motorhome trip.

One of the larger islands is Mull, a great destination for motorhomers. A real Scottish wilderness with some amazing scenary. Home to the famous Golden Eagles, you may also see otters, Minke whales and dolphins around the islands. Once you’ve parked your van in one of the six campsites on Mull, it’s time to explore and take a walking tour of the peaceful hills of the island or discover the rocky bays to the north.

A well known tourist route is to drive along the Mallaig road towards the camping sites of Arisaig, where you will find plenty to see and do. Surrounded by stunning scenery, this area is a must see for all who visit the Hebridean islands.

As we near the end of the tour, take in one last island to complete this tour of the Hebrides. Board the ferry and head on over to Skye, another island full of history. There is the famous Tallisker distillery open for visitors on the island and a large number of sights related to the Gaelic history of the place. After you have seen all that Skye has to offer, take the bridge back to the tour starting point of Glasgow.

The journey back to Glasgow is very scenic and one that you will remember for a long time. High mountains and yes, walls are among the impressive sights you’ll see on the way back. A definite stop for all independent camper van travelers on the way towards Loch Lomond park for the final time. For first time camper van hirers, this is an excellent route to introduce you into the freedom lifestyle and one that will stick in the memory for a long time to come.

Walking along the lake would usually take an hour. It would take even a day because of the cafes, restaurants and bars present along the way. The lake has its existence due to a glacier that slipped-off into the valley from the mountains 14000 years back. The attractive lake has found its formation as a result of this.
When you think of Brussels, you might not think of good food. Ah, what a mistake. Belgium has excellent food and Brussels leads the way. You should only stay for a few days or you will do serious damage to your waistline.

Belgium is a mix of French and Flemish influences. In fact, there has been talk of the country splitting in two. This has resulted in a culinary tradition of tremendous chocolate, beer and, of course, heavenly waffles.

You will discover waffles as you have never had them before. They are eaten as dessert not breakfast. Mussels that are served with fries. Numerous shops selling chocolates and pralines. Simply put, this city is going to damage to your waistline.

Brussels is sweet in ways you cannot imagine. In addition to dessert waffles, the city is famous for brewing the best cherry beer in the world. It is excellent and must be tried. You can almost watch your waistline expand.

As the calories pile up, you are inevitably going to start thinking about exercising. Brussels is top notch in this area as well. You can rent a bike just about anywhere and go for a relaxing ride that will use up some of those waffles and beer.

Brussels is better if you try to go local. Skip the big chain hotels. Book a room in the many family inns in the city. They will treat you like family and show you where to go to see, hear and taste the real Brussels.

Brussels is best experienced on a casual level. Spend a day checking out the typical tourist attractions. Then spend another one just putting around and taking in the sites. The people are very friendly.

Brussels is somewhat of a hidden gem in Europe. It does not have the Eiffel Tower or Sistine Chapel, but it has a ton of charm, friendly people and tremendous food. If you want to avoid the crowds, give it a taste.

If you want to visit the world famous Oktoberfest, do not go to Munich during October! Many tourists make this common mistake based upon the assumption that this beer festival is held during October. The truth is that Oktoberfest is actually held during the month of September.

This year, Oktoberfest will be held from September 20th to October 5th in Munich. In order to be a part of the festival, you must purchase tickets that will gain you a seat inside one of the many tents. Those that are not seated will not be permitted to drink, so make sure to plan in advance.

With most festivals, you only know they start on a certain date. Not Oktoberfest in Munich. The mayor comes out to tap the first barrel of beer and does so to a 12 gun salute! The drinking starts, but a Bierliechen is not what you want to become.

Sooner or later, we all have an episode where maybe we drink a bit too much. At Oktoberfest, it seems all foreigners do it at the same time. From Americans to Japanese, you see people passed out everywhere. These beer corpses are given the name Bierleichen.

Once you are down and out from consuming adult beverages, you will be collected. You German hosts will haul you off to a medical tent where you will be checked out and steps will be taken to return you to the living again.

To avoid the tent, keep two things in mind. First, drink in some sort of moderation. Second, eat some of the hearty German food available. It is definitely a meat eating diet, but excellent soft pretzels are available to vegetarians.

If you want have a party atmosphere in mind when you think of Oktoberfest, you may want to spend the early evening hours outside of those tents enjoying the many park rides. A few years ago, a quiet law was implemented at the festival that forbade any loud music before 6pm.

During the day and late afternoon, there is definitely more of a local, family feel to Oktoberfest. Traditional woodwind music is played and the crowd has a more diverse feel from an age perspective. This makes Oktoberfest a festival for all.

e Museums of Bruges

If you are planning to skip across the pond to Europe, you mustn’t miss the small town of Bruges, Belgium. While most people head to Belgium in search of fries and waffles, Bruges has a lot more to offer than standard fare. This town is all about museums of every shape and kind.

Though nobody has ever stopped to ponder why Bruges’ streets are lined with museum after museum, it just so happens to be the truth. If you are one of those tourists that doesn’t care for a bit of history, this town is picturesque enough to entertain even if you do not step inside a museum.

For those that love history, however, Bruges is a slice of heaven on earth. Within the historic section of the city you will find the Groeninge Museum; Gruuthuse Museum; Memling Museum; Renaissance Hall; Archeological Museum, Folklore Museum; and many more captivating glimpses into the past.

Let’s begin with the Folklore Museum since it is very popular with visitors. This museum is home to the 17th century almshouses that still belong to the Bruges cobblers’ corporation. You will find ancient classrooms, a cobbler’s studio, a Flemish home, and an ancient confectioner’s shop.

The Groeninge Museum is mostly a fine arts gallery that is home to many of the paintings done by local artists of Bruges. You will find works by Hugo van der Goes, Hans Memling, Gerard David, and Jan Van Eyck. This museum is worth a few hours just to see the many striking paintings held within.

Next up is the Gruuthuse Museum, which was once part of the Van Brugghe-van der Aa family estate. The family owned the only Gruut house in the area. For those of you who don’t know, Gruut was a type of medieval spice mix used to create beer. This museum is truly fascinating.

The Memling Museum is, essentially, a tribute to the life of artist Hans Memling. Hans Memling was one of the most influential Flemish painters, though he was actually born in Germany. The museum is bathed in light and paint – something that is not to be missed.

Unlike most of the other museums that Bruges has to offer, Renaissance Hall can really transport a visitor back to the palace of the Brugse Vrije. You will find that a 16th century Renaissance chimney, lots of gleaming wood, and plenty of fine alabaster do a nice job transporting you back in time.

Lastly, the Archaeological Museum is a perfect example of how life used to be in Bruges. Bits of glass, leather, metal, wood, and stone are showcased inside of this grand hall. Additionally, tourists will be treated to a fine display of murals from a variety of periods.

The beauty of Bruges, Belgium is multi-faceted. Museums are definitely high on the list of things to see, but it is a friendly city worth just strolling around in and definitely worth a visit on your travels.
