A Couple Of The Many Things To Do In Manchester During A Short Stay

Manchester is situated in the southern part of North-west England. It is an ancient city that dates back to AD79 when a Roman fort was established here. It remained a small town for many centuries, until the population started exploding during the 19th century as a result of the boom in the textile industry during that time. The number of things to do Manchester is forever growing.

Most people probably know that the city is home to an icon of UK football ‘ Manchester United. Any visit to Manchester will therefore be incomplete without a visit to the Old Trafford stadium. It’s open to tourists during all times of the year except on Christmas day. There’s also a very interesting museum on the grounds which is well worth a visit.

Manchester is also famous for music. You can attend more musical performances in the city at any time than in virtually any other place in the UK. The main venue for pop music is the well-known Manchester Evening News Arena. This not only the biggest arena of its type in Europe, but also the busiest indoor arena anywhere anywhere on earth ‘ hosting more performances than the New York Madison Square Gardens.

If you are a classical music devotee, Manchester is sure to live up to your expectations. The city boasts two important symphony orchestras. The biggest one is the BBC philharmonic orchestra, closely followed by the Halle Orchestra. Both have regular performances during most times of the year.

Then there are of course the brass bands of Manchester. They form part of a very important tradition in Northern England. The city produced some famous brass bands in the UK and there are numerous performances during all times of the year.

The dance, opera and theater scene in the city is, to say the least, thriving. On any particular night you can attend a multitude of performances in any of the many theaters and opera houses all over town. If you like West-End shows, there are regular performances of these as well.

There’s an ever-increasing number of museums and galleries in town. The city’s Roman heritage is portrayed by numerous exhibitions, as well as the important role it played during the Industrial Revolution. The municipal art gallery carries a permanent exhibition of top European paintings, as well as a number of noteworthy pre-Raphaelite paintings.
